FIREMAN SUITS AND EQUIPMENT

In this profession, the quality of the fireman suits and equipment is of key importance for the safety of firefighters, because extinguishing a fire is very dangerous. Along with putting out fires, firefighters must contend with smoke, water, embers, falling objects, and crumbling floors. In many cases, firefighters have very little time to safely evacuate individuals from burning buildings and structures. Firefighters use a range of personal protection equipment to shield themselves from potential dangers. Besides fireman suits, they also must wear additional protection equipment, such as fire helmets (made of heat-resistant materials), fire boots, air supply systems, fire masks, and filters, to do their duties safely.

WHAT ARE FIREMAN SUITS CALLED?

When referring to the protective clothes used by firefighters, “bunker gear” or “turnout gear” is a term that is commonly used by many fire departments. The pants and boots were typically kept near the firefighter’s bunk at the fire station and were always ready to be used. This is where the term “bunker gear” got its name from.

WHAT ARE THE BEST FIREMAN SUITS?

Fireman suits are made from materials that are difficult to ignite, have a low flame spread rate, or are self-extinguishing (they cease burning when the flame is withdrawn) and do not shrink or melt when exposed to heat. These substances are selected such that no hazardous gases are produced during combustion.

For the construction of fireman suits, the precise choice of materials and their combination in all layers of clothing is of utmost importance, as protection against flame and heat is achieved through the employment of comprehensive protective apparel. In practice, a variety of textile materials are used to manufacture fireman suits, which can be composed of flame-resistant fibers (e.g., wool), non-flammable fibers (cellulose fibers), and so-called high-performance fibers manufactured for this purpose or mixtures thereof.

Our FYRPRO® 440 fireman suits are produced following EN 469:2005+A1:2006+AC:2006 standard (Protective clothing for firefighters – Performance rules for protective clothing used in firefighting). They are CE-certified. These clothes have the EC Type examination certificate, which is in the 89/686/EEC personal protective equipment class and is mandatory. These fireman suits have the MED certificate, which is mandatory for ships following the Ship Equipment Directive 96/98/EC. The fireman suits have a design that facilitates mobility. Our fireman suits consist of two parts, a jacket, and trousers. They have four-layer systems:

– Outer Layer: NOMEX OUTER SHELL TOUGH – 75% NOMEX®, 23% KEVLAR, 5% P 140
– Moisture Barrier: FR mesh fabric + PU membrane
– Heat Barrier: 100% Aramid felt
– Inner Layer: 50% Aramid, 50% Viscose FR
– Reflectors: Yellow/grey/yellow, with aramid carrier

WHAT KIND OF BOOTS DO FIREMEN WEAR?

Besides fireman suits, firefighters also must wear fire boots. They are called bunker or turn-out boots. The tops of the boots are flame and radiant heat resistant. The boots have a non-slip sole. They don’t melt when they come into contact with hot surfaces. Bunker boots are also resistant to fuel oil, mineral oils, acids, and solvents. The boots’ steel-reinforced toe can withstand 200 J of pressure. The steel midsole is puncture-resistant and can withstand forces of up to 1100 N. For the inner lining we use cotton. They’re dark in color. They can be worn with chemical suits that have passed the EN 943-5 standard. Our bunker boots receive the SEE-BG certification for the marine industry.

WHAT IS THE BEST FIREMAN’S HELMET?

During rescue work or fire extinguishing, our leatherhead provides complete head protection. Our leatherhead has a unique design that is classified as Personal Protective Equipment (89/686/EEC). This helmet is CE-certified and meets the EN 443 standard. It meets the requirements of the MED directive. A moveable visor inside the helmet protects the face from polyethersulfone material that is resistant to 250°C and meets EN 166 and EN 14458 requirements. Withstands a 14 kW/m2 flow radiant heat test.

OUTER SHELL OF THE FIREMAN’S HELMET

The outer shell of the helmet is made of fire-resistant material. It has an exterior layer that is fully reflective. The back of the neck and face are covered by the inner shell. The outer shell has colorful stripes and it is reflective. It has an interior ventilation channel and a longitudinal outer relief. The outer shell is made of a shock-absorbing material. It may be adjusted to fit any head size (from 54 to 62). It’s made of a special inner lining material that won’t irritate your skin.
